This lovely dress comes from Sew Liberated. It’s a simple dress with no darts or closures, making it easy to sew. My favorite feature of this dress are the pockets. There are side seam and patch pockets. Hooray for all of the pockets! It’s also reversible, so you get two dresses in one! What’s not to love about this dress?
Adjustments
I found the sizes for this pattern were generous, more like that of retail sizing. To give you an idea, a size 10 for the Metamorphic Dress has a 36″ bust, whereas a size 10 for McCall’s is listed as a 32.5″ bust. I chose to go down a size from my usual pattern size. I also made a couple of adjustments to the bodice. First, I lengthened the bodice by 1″, so that it would hit at my natural waist. Second, I found the shoulders were a bit wide, so I narrowed in the straps a tiny bit. I didn’t have to make any changes to the skirt. Overall, I don’t think I had to do anything too complicated to change up the fit.
Fabric Options
This is where the Metamorphic dress shines! As the dress is reversible, there’s a lot of ways to have fun with fabric choices. It recommends a “fabric with a nice drape”, such as rayons and lightweight fabrics. Linen or cotton would be a good choice if you’re looking for a more crisp, structured look. There’s plenty of ways to mix and match patterns too! If you plan on making it reversible, one of your fabrics will show from the “wrong side”. So keep that in mind as you choose fabric.
In the end, I chose a Brussels Washer linen in “Creamsicle” for the top layer and the yarn-dyed version in “Redrock” for the bottom layer. This linen-rayon blend is very soft and has a nice drape. It’s quite breathable, but I found it a bit heavy to wear in 115-degree desert heat. No worries though, because it will be perfect for layering during Fall and Winter! For my next go, I would like to try a sand washed rayon for a lightweight Summer dress.
Styling the Metamorphic Dress
Fall is the season for layering, and this dress is made for it! With its looser fit, there’s plenty of room to wear a t-shirt or a lightweight sweater underneath. A cardigan or a fluffy sweater would be great to wear on top too. On cool days, some tights, leggings, or jeans may be layered to keep the chill off of my legs. Then, I would polish off the look a cosy scarf and some boots. There’s so many options for cute fall looks, I’m sure this dress will be in constant rotation in my wardrobe!
Metamorphic Dress Review
This wasn’t a quick sew for me, as I had to make two dresses in one. Yet in the end, I found the directions were clear and easy to follow. The video tutorial for the “Burrito Method” was helpful as well. I love that this dress is reversible and has so many pockets! I had a lot of fun making this dress and I would like to make another one soon. Maybe I’ll make that Summer dress next! Overall, I think the Metamorphic Dress is a perfect pick for a fall dress. It’s easy to wear it on it own, and it’s fun to layer with on cool days. I love this dress!
