The French knot can be difficult to understand at first, but with a little practice you will see why this stitch is so popular! This stitch can be used to dot “I’s”, make polka dots, add texture, and fill in shapes.
How to Make a French Knot:
- Bring your needle up from the back to the front of your fabric.
- Wrap your thread around the needle twice. Make sure your remaining thread is at the bottom, near the tip of your needle.
- Use your other hand to keep this thread tightly wrapped around your needle.
- Bring your needle down right next to where your thread came up. Do not bring it down at the same spot, or the knot will disappear!
Tips:
- I like to make my French knots with my hoop placed on the edge of a table, so that I can use both hands for these. To make it even easier, use a hoop frame.
- There are two ways to vary the size of your French knot. First, you can experiment with different threads of floss used. Second, you can change the amount of times your thread is wrapped around your needle. You can wrap your thread around your needle 1-4 times to change the size of your knot. If you wrap your thread more than 4 times, your knot will be quite tall.
- Test the size of your French knot on a piece of scrap fabric before adding them to your project.
