As we all know by now, 2020 was a year like no other. One thing that 2020 has taught me is to be more flexible and forgiving in my planning. Even though my goals changed quite a bit over the last year, I’m still excited to make some plans for this year. This year, I’m focusing on goals that will allow for flexibility.
Reflecting on 2020
Last year, I made a sewing planner which outlined all of my sewing goals for the year. As you can probably guess, some of those goals changed or were forgotten. And yes, that’s true. Life changed very much in my house, so I had to let go of certain projects. That’s okay though, because I still know where I want to grow in this new year. As I go through my planner, I’ll transfer some of my old goals from last year, and make a few new ones to add for this year. I’m excited to get more sewing done this year!
Taking a Look at 2021
Now with my daughter doing remote learning and my husband working from home, my free time has changed. How we use our home has changed too. Our guest room is now an office, our dining table is a school desk, and our living room is where I work. So I need to keep our new use of space in mind for my goals this year.
On top of that, we already have a cross country move in the works. We have lived in Arizona for over a year. While we love it here, we have decided to move back to our home state of Michigan. With this in mind, my goals for the new year need to be adaptable for our big move as well.
Some of My New Goals for the New Year
Finish up my online courses.
Over the last couple of years, I have done a few online courses on Udemy. I love them because they’re a self paced way to keep learning new things. I have a couple of courses that I would like to finish up this year. If you’re looking to boost your résumé or learn something new, you should check them out!
Make at least 12 new patterns for the shop.
This year I want to put a bigger focus on my Etsy shop. I would like to create at least 1 new embroidery pattern each month.
Read in the evenings.
I used to be really good at reading every night before bed, but I haven’t done this in a while. I have several books on my shelf that are waiting to be read. Plus, it’s a much better way to wrap up the day, than watching The Office for the millionth time, right?
Find new, healthy recipes.
Over the past few months, I’ve been in a cooking rut. I keep cooking the same recipes over and over. So, I think it’s time to find some new, healthy recipes to add some excitement to our dinner menu.
Learn sashiko.
This was one of my goals from last year, and this year I still really want to learn sashiko embroidery!
Sew one garment with fabric from my stash.
This is another goal from last year. With a move in the near future, it’s a great time go through my fabric stash. I don’t plan on clearing out my stash, but making one last project before I pack it away would be helpful. Maybe it’s time to finally make that chambray skirt that I’ve been wanting to make!
Learn to knit.
When I was young, my Grandma tried to teach me how to knit. Several times, in fact! I always got frustrated with it and stopped. So now that we’re moving back to a colder climate, I think this would be the perfect time to try it again. Lately, I’ve noticed a bunch of really pretty knitting patterns on Pinterest, and it’s making me inspired to give it another go. Plus, I really need some new sweaters!
Exciting Things to Come
2020 was rough, but I think it’s good to still be hopeful for the new year. Yes, it might be just as crazy and unexpected! The important thing is to have things to get you excited. Making goals for yourself can do just that. What excites you? What do you want to do more of? These are a few things to think about when creating your goals. So, what goals do you have for this year?
