The split stitch is a versatile stitch that’s used to make outlines, straight lines, and curved lines. You can also fill in shapes by stitching your rows close together. This stitch is popular to use to make letters too!
How to Do a Split Stitch:
- Bring your needle up from the back of the fabric. Then, bring your needle back down to make a running stitch.
- Bring your needle back up halfway through your previous stitch. You will “split” through the middle of this stitch.
- Bring your needle back down again to complete your stitch.
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 until your line is complete!
Tips:
- This stitch works best with an even number threads of floss, so that you can split through your stitches easily, and evenly.
- Use short stitches for curved lines for a smoother appearance.
- This stitch is popular to use as an outline before using a satin stitch. This will give a satin stitch a raised, defined edge.
