Just like its name, the stem stitch is a great stitch for making stems. You can also use the stem stitch to make straight or curved lines. It’s a great option to make letters too!
How to Do a Stem Stitch:
- Bring your needle up from the back of your fabric, and make a running stitch. Don’t pull your thread tight yet.
- Bring your needle up half way through your previous stitch. Do not pierce through your previous stitch though! Instead, you will work around it. Pull your thread so that your stitch lies flat.
- Make another running stitch and bring your needle back up at the end of your previous stitch. Make sure to bring your needle up on the same side of your previous stitch for every stitch. Pull your thread so that your stitch lies flat.
- After a few stitches, your line will start to look like a rope. Repeat step 3 until your line is complete!
Tips:
- The length of your stitches will determine its ‘rope’ like appearance. Shorter stitches will make it more twisted like a rope. Whereas, longer stitches will have a looser twist.
- You can change the appearance of this stitch based on where you bring your needle up through the previous stitch. Again, this will affect how ‘rope’ like this stitch will look.
